Western cities such as Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and New Orleans in the US grow rapidly due to the fact that citizens of the country are drawn to them. People migrate to the cities in search of work, and this demand leads to more houses and apartments being built. As the population grows, businesses and shops increase in number as the needs of the people must be met. Again this leads to employment opportunities, and somewhat of a multiplier effect is produced, leading to cities growing at a fast pace. Urban areas are set to grow by around two per cent this year in America, and the population of major cities is expected to double in the next four decades.
  • Pittsburgh
The second largest city in the state of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh currently has a population of just over 300,000 residents. The city was founded in 1758 and has since developed a thriving economy. After the collapse of the steel industry, Pittsburgh adapted to specialize in industries such as healthcare and technology. In the center of the city there are many business headquarters and financial institutions, whilst neighborhoods and smaller shops litter the outskirts.
  • Cincinnati
Cincinnati is located in the state of Ohio. It is a boomtown of the 19th century, and now skyscrapers and large offices in the city play host to financial, political and business corporations. Most of those in the city have typical office jobs, or otherwise work in various shops and restaurants. Cincinnati is home to many architectural structures and has a rich and diverse history, making it a popular tourist destination.
  • New Orleans
New Orleans is a large city and US port in Louisiana. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, and features some beautiful scenery along the borderlines, although the inner city area is very atypical. In recent times, the area has become known because of the devastation caused there by the Hurricane Katrina, which took around 1500 lives in New Orleans and the surrounding areas.
