I really like the experiment that was conducted in Stockholm, Sweden to provide evidence for the Fun Theory.

The hypothesis was that people could be encouraged to make positive changes to their behaviour simply by introducing a "fun element" into the scenario.

For the experiment, they placed a 'keyboard staircase" into the exit of a subway station and observed that 66% more travellers chose to climb the stairs (choosing a healthier but more difficult option) over taking the escalator to the surface.

Although pretty simple, I really like this experiment because it shows that making things entertaining can encourage people to make positive decisions - and who doesn't want that?!

Here's another pretty cool application of the theory, this time used to persuade the public to recycle their trash:

did a bit more research, apparently it was thought up by an ad agency on behalf of VW! Pretty interesting though: http://www.thefuntheory.com/

I read about this in a marketing blog & have taken part in a tweetup where we saw this as an example of gamification - really interesting stuff!

I think the Stamford Prison Guard Experiment is equally intriguing and horrifying - would I or people I know act like this too?

Milgram - it is interesting stuff. What is scary about really early psychology 'research' is that some of it 'provided support' to some really nasty ideas and resulted in horrific outcomes for marginalised people. (I studied Psychology & Sociology). On the positive said there are many thing we now understand much better & as a result have made positive impacts on people's personal & work lives.
