Atoms are not animated objects so no, they don't die. But if you are saying if they can be destroyed or turn into a different element (hence no longer being that specific element), then yes they can "die". This can be shown with the explosions of atomic bombs or when elements decay into a different element.

Interesting. So what happens in a nuclear explosion for example? Does the atom that's being split cease to exist?

The atom itself yes but you can't really define it like that because it
doesn't just cease to exist and turns to nothing it becomes something else because of the existence of the first law of thermodynamics that says that mass-energy can't cease to exist and isn't lost but it can take other forms and pass from one place to another. That means that the energy of the atom transforms into something else mostly kinetic energy like heat etc..
