My friend has some dry ice in his house. What's the best/safest way of disposing of it?

Take it outside so that it will sublimate, but not in a general public area. Dry ice will sublimate, meaning convert from its solid form into gas form, so you will need to take it outside so that the gases that the dry ice emits will not be in your household, as it can potentially be dangerous since it's purely made from solid Carbon Dioxide.

However, it's even dangerous trying to touch it for at least several seconds because of how cold it is. What I would suggest is to grab it with some kind of thick cloth, thick to the point where it will completely isolate the cold temperature from your grip, and then place it outside to let it sublimate. But try to make it so that others won't be exposed to the gases that will emit from the dry ice.

I am a chemist and I know dry ice is super fun! But most importantly it is dangerous to carry around. If you really want to keep it, store it on a thick insultated container and place it on a really ventilated space. Dry ice is made of carbon dioxide and it will slowly vaporize. But enjoy it, if you can.
