Speech give more latitude for the emotion of the person delivering it than a written document will unless the writer is particularly skilled. Speech can often let you reach a wider audience because it doesn't depend as strongly on how literate your audience is. Usually you can be more relaxed with references when giving a speech than when writing a paper/article.
