Every eye has its own pattern of blood vessels (retinal vascular pattern) that are unique.  Not even identical twins have the same pattern.  Because of the internal location of the retina in the body, it is protected from changes or alterations unlike fingerprints.  An infra-red light scans the retina, and a computer matches its pattern against those already in the computer's memory.
