The word propulsion is derived from two Latin words, pro meaning before or forward and pellere meaning to drive. It means to push forward or drive an object forward. It describes the action of pushing or driving, usually forward or onward or moving an object and maintaining its motion. A propulsion system is a machine that produces thrust to push an object forward. It means to add speed or acceleration to an object by an engine or other similar device.
There are different types of propulsion. In aeronautics propulsion refers to the study of how to design an engine that will provide the thrust that is needed for a plane to take off and fly through the air. Thus it is used in space craft also. In swimming it is the force that drives the swimmer forward and is created by the swimmer's arms and legs. Likewise it can be used to several other things like jet propulsion, rocket propulsion, chemical propulsion etc.
