This question seems to be referring to the forming of the constitution of the United States of America.

Divine rights advocates would be most threatened because a social contract theory directly questions the authority of monarchs and the state versus freedom and rights of the individual. The divine-right theory of kingship is a political and religious doctrine that insists that the monarch is in his/her position because they are chosen by the over-ruling will of God.

John Locke is one of the fathers of social contract theory. Born in the 17th Century in England, he advocated the separation of power of the government and the right of man to question the authority (the powers that be) who rule over civil society.

The people of the state are those who 'sign on' with the government in a social contract atmosphere and become subject to them. In return the people of the state expect their lives and possessions will be protected.

The American Declaration of Independence draws heavily on the ideas of social contract theory. American founding father and third president Thomas Jefferson called John Locke one of the most important thinkers in history. The Declaration of Independence is a social contract between the American federal government and the people of the country.
