As I understand it, the Philippines emerged as a result of millions of years of seismic activity and volcanic eruptions that occurred deep below the sea.

Due to their location in the pacific "ring of fire", the Philippine islands experience a large amount of seismic activity to this very day, making them more susceptible to earthquakes and volcanoes.
So, the very force that created the archipelago, is also a very real threat to its inhabitants, as was seen with the 5.2 magnitude earthquake that struck in 2015.
