I think it's because when you have money, it seems as if you have more choices in what you want to do or what you need to do. When you're always broke, it gives you the feeling of never having enough, of not being able to take care of your needs and at least a want every once in a while.
When you're always having to pinch pennies, watch what you spend your money on, it gets to be exhausting. You just want to take away the stress of not having enough money.
So, if there's something that you need and you don't have the financial means to get it, sometimes it can make you feel like a failure. Does this make sense, Otis?
