Why does New York have so many people, if it's freezing cold there? Why don't they live somewhere warm, like LA? I'm also surprised at the # of celebrities who choose to live there.

It's only cold a few months of the year. Well worth the sacrifice.

By the way you worded your question, I will assume you mean New York City..

There's something to say about walking out your front door and having all the city's bustling economy going on right in front of you.

When I lived in London and Paris for a bit,  I just loved walking out the door and just walking to where I needed to go and seeing all sorts of interesting people on the way.

(Yes there are plenty of strange people there that's for sure, but natives of New York City are pretty used to it.)

New York City is the same way as those large European cities. Also, so much heritage is there...people that live there LOVE IT.

Also, quite a few  have second homes in Florida or California they go to during the winter.

It's so expensive there though. I don't know how many afford it, but they find a way to be in a place that has so much in one area.

You could live there your whole life and only see 1/4 of the places to visit there.

There are many areas much farther north that have much more severe weather .. And many more people who obviously live there because that's where they prefer to live .. In comparison .. Personally I don't think I could stand living in any of the hot southern states because of the extreme heat .. Not everyone can live on the beach .. Now that would be far too crowded

Who wouldn't live in NYC? That's where it's all happening.

But their weather has always puzzled me. From my reading it seems to be very cold in the winter, very hot in the summer. Seems it gets the worst of both seasons. Does anybody know the reason for that?

Hi Biker Girl. I live about 60 km from the Sydney (population 4,000,000) CBD which means I was close enough to commute to work but far enough out (on the Blue Mountains) so that I don't need to feel a part of it. If I go to the beach I skirt around the south side of the suburbs and hardly know I'm in the city at all. So I take your point but here we have the choice of both worlds.

Hi Sin. Hadn't thought of that. We get it in Sydney to some extent, I supposed. I once watched a woman leave a building on one of our "wind tunnels" in the middle of a heavy rainstorm with a howling southerly gale. She was in a hurry and put on her raincoat as she left. That went well until she extended her right arm to push it down the sleeve and raised her raincoat like a sail. She fairly blew down the street. Thank goodness it wasn't an umbrella She'd have been airborne.

Didge,

I was born in NYC and lived there until I was 7, so I was mildly intrigued by your comment.

I don't know the answer, but I searched with the phrase why does new york have extreme weather and got some hits. Some of those hits seemed promising, but I didn't pursue them any further.

You might look some of them over.

OK. Got things to do now but I'll use that search string later. Thanks for taking the trouble.

Maybe they like having the different seasons and enjoy the cold for the few months they have it. I can't figure out why anyone would want to live in LA. The traffic alone is enough to keep me from there.

A lot of people do live in L.A., it's completely overcrowded there. And NY is only cold part of the year--sometimes it's nice to live in a place with four seasons.

I'm from Florida so I can't really talk, though. Cold? What's that? We don't have that here :P
