The total number of electrons in an energy level can be calculated from the formula 2n2. Now for the fourth energy level maximum number of electrons are as follows:

  2n2

=  2(4)2

= 32 electrons

This formula makes sense because there are four sub-levels in the fourth energy level and if s has two electrons, p has six, d has 10 and f has 14 then the maximum number of electrons in the fourth energy level are 32.
