The skull protects the brain. If the brain is injured in any way, it is the main reason all our bodily functions function.  So if the brain is injured in any way, something vital to our existance may shut down causing death.  The brain is very sensitive and complicated.  It is so precious to our being, that it needs to be well protected, more than any other part of our bodies

The skull is very important and protects the brain like a helmet, but can only do so much that is why extra gear, helmets are provided to prevent brain injury
