JOHANN DOBEREINER is a german chemist who grouped the elements with similar properties in sets of three.
Dobereiner also noticed an interesting point regarding the atomic weights of the elements in each of his triads. When Dobereiner arranged the elements in a triad in order of their atomic weights, the properties of the middle element were half way between those of the other two elements. For example, the relative atomic mass of sodium (23.0) is the same as the average of the relative atomic masses of lithium (Li) and potassium (K)
In addition, other properties of the middle element (such as melting point and boiling point) also had a value close to the average of the other two elements in the triad. The discovery of these triads and the links between the properties of elements and their relative atomic masses led other chemists to search for patterns in the properties of all the known elements.

Early in the nineteenth century, a German chemist called Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner noticed that several elements could be arranged in groups or families of three. These groups or families became known as Dobereiner's Triads. One example is the trial of metals, lithium, sodium and potassium.

• German chemist best know for work that foreshadowed the periodic law for the chemical elements.
