The parotid gland is the largest salivary gland in the human body. It is located under the skin in front of the ear and behind the mouth and cheek, at the side of the face. Everyone has two parotid glands, one on the left side and one on the right side.
The gland produces the water substance known as saliva - that duct from the parotid gland comes out into the buccal cavity on the inside of the cheek opposite the second back molar at each side of the mouth.
The term parotid gland is attributed to the largest salivary glands and you can find it in the subcutaneous tissue on the face of a person. The gland overlays on the mandibular ramus and also on the anterior and inferior of the external ear.
The gland is one of the most common one that is prone to disease and the when it come to the inflammation of the gland it is caused mostly by the disease called mumps. The disease that happens because of the mumps is known to the world as parotitis and earlier it was one of the most widespread one. Owing to the vaccination there is a sharp decrease in the incident of parotitis. There are some other reasons also that because parotitis and the prime among them are bacterial infections that cause the blockage of duct from the salivary duct calculi.
The paratoid gland, or the more common name the salivary gland is wrapped around the mandibular ramus in the mouth, and serves the function of secreting saliva from Stensons Duct into the mouth to assist in the dual processes of chewing or masticating, and swallowing. The gland is part of the lymphatic system of glands that play a highly complex and essential role in the functioning of the human body. This gland can often be involved when the body has tumours or cancer, as the lymphatic system is often involved. The lymph nodes become swollen and are affected, as the body tries to fight off the invaders and attemps to keep the lymphatic system functioning normally. Although a very small part of human anatomy, the paratoid gland plays a vital role in keeping us healthy and our bodies functioning.
