The female gametophyte of the pine tree is the one which carry on to grow. It forms archegonia. Each of the archegonia have an egg cell. In a pollen tube, there are two non-motile sperm cells. These two non-motile sperm cells develop for one of the cells which are formed from the generative cell.

The archegonium is penetrated by the pollen tube. It releases the sperm and the process of fertilisation takes place. The embryo is developed in the initial stages by the process of free nuclear division. The seed which is mature and winged is shed and the wind disperses the new generation of sporophytes which is produced.

To sum it up, the female gametophyte of the Pinus is developed by the process of free nuclear division, which is defined as the mitotic division of nuclei which is not accompanied by the process of cytokinesis. The seed of a pine tree has a central embryo and many cotyledons.
