The eye is an amazing piece of human machinery! From the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed, your eye is working, taking in and processing loads of information to enable you to see. The eye then sends this information to your brain.
The average eye is about the size of a ping-pong ball and sits in the eye socket in your skull. It is protected by a lid of skin called the eye-lid and this stops anything like dust getting in and damaging it. The white part that you can see in your eye is called the sclera. The sclera is made out of a tough natural substance and is akin to a protective shield of armour which protects all the blood vessels in your eyeball. In addition to the sclera, every eyeball has blood vessels, a cornea, a pupil, an iris and a chamber called an anterior. This chamber is filled with a fluid that gives oxygen, protein and glucose to the eye to keep it healthy.
If someone loses an eye, an artificial one can be made. These prosthetic eyes are usually made out of plastic or glass. Although prosthetic eyes can look remarkably like the real thing, they have yet to make one that can work like the natural human eye.
