The phase charges from solid -> liquid -> gas are endothermic, meaning they absorb energy (heat). The phase changes in reverse are exothermic meaning they give off energy (heat). So when water freezes it gives of energy. The amount of heat released when going from liquid to solid is known as the latent heat of fusion and is equal to 334 Joules/gram.
