In modern periodic table elements are divided in to metals, non metals.and metalliods. Chemically all the elements which have a tendency to form positive ion by losing electrons are considered metals. all metals are good conductors of electricity and heat. A characteristic property of met5al is that they form basic oxides which gives bases when dissolved in water.

As it become easier to remove the electron of an atom bigger in size, therefore metallic character increases from top to bottom in a given group of elements. On the contrary it decreases from left to right in a period, the elements of group 7A(the halogen) are least metallic in nature.

The elements which gain electron and form negative ions are called non metals. All gases are non metals. The non metals are poor conductor of heat and electricity. Non metals form acidic oxides which yield acids on dissolving in water.Non metallic character of an element. decreases as the atomic size increases. Therefore in a group of non metals like halogens. the non metallic character decreases from top to bottom. The member at the top.Fluorine is the most non metallic element of the periodic table. This trend can also be verified in the element of group 5A and 6A Nitrogen and Oxygen are pire non metals and usually exist in gaseous state while Bismith and Polonium. the members at the bottom of theses groups are fairly metallic in nature.

Generally the elements on the left hand side in the center and at the bottom of the periodic table are metals. While the non metals are in the upper right corner of the table
Some elements especially lower members of group 3A.4A.5A have properties of both metals as well as non metals.these elements are called semi metals or metalloids

In groups, atomic radii add to with atomic figure as the quantity of energy level raise. Difficulty, utilize table S, confirm the tendency by creation a saloon chart for group 1. Inside time, atomic radii reduce when atomic figure add to as the nuclear accuse add to draw electrons nearer to the nucleus. Difficulty, utilize table S, confirm the tendency by creation a row chart for time 2. Ionic radius tendency, slogan helpful ions is forever lesser than their close relative atoms and anions unhelpful ions are forever bigger. Example, while contrast to the neutral atom of S, the ion S 2 has a bigger radius than S when S+4 and S+5 are in that order lesser.

In groups, electro unhelpfulness reduces while atomic figure add to as the additional energy stage protect the influence of the nucleus to draw electrons. Difficulty, utilize table S, confirm the trend by making a bar graph for group 2.In periods, electro unhelpfulness raise with atomic figure as the add to in nuclear accuse create the nucleus extra influential to grip on to electrons. Difficulty, utilize table S, confirm the tendency by making a line graph for period 3.

In groups, metallic quality raise with atomic figure as each consecutive part obtain neighboring to Fr. In periods, metallic quality reduce while atomic figure add to because each consecutive part gets neighboring in the direction of.
