Heavy rains can cause tsunamis, tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, typhoons, etc. There is no official record as to determine where natural disasters occur more frequently.

However, some of the deadliest natural disasters in the cities can be listed as follows:
  • Pacific typhoons can be considered as the worst type of natural disaster. In 1979, they killed around 99 people in the United States.
  • In 1960, Chile recorded the worst earthquake in history. It killed 6,000 people and Hawaii was also seriously affected. It took a long time for Chile to get back to normal life.
  • The 2003 European heat wave killed 16,000 people. It was the worst disaster recorded for that year. European countries have a colder climate for most of the year; hence the heat wave could not be tolerated by many Europeans.
  • In 1993, a cyclonic storm hit the east coast of the United States. It resulted in heavy snowfall which killed almost 300 people. Electrical power was knocked off for days. In the absence of electric heaters, people froze to death.
  • The deadliest disaster ever recorded is the great flood of 1931 in Central China. The three major rivers: The Yellow, the Yangtze and the Huai drowned millions, while many more died from starvation and waterborne diseases.
  • All the natural disasters occur due to man's abuse of nature. Natural disasters occur usually because of the atmospheric vulnerability. If geological energy increases in the Earth's crust it results in earthquakes. There is no regard for the environment whatsoever. Pollution of all types has resulted in global warming. Moreover, emission of greenhouse gases, industrial pollution, and vehicular pollution has aggravated the problem. Hence no area can be considered safe. A natural disaster can strike anywhere, anytime.
