It is easiest and best for the plant to prune it in the fall after the leaves drop, and growth has slowed and/or shrub has become dormant This also works best because you can really see the growth of the shrub so much better. In the spring (very early), re-examine any branches that may have died during winter, and prune those out well before buds set. Good luck!
