If, for example, you were five foot and six inches, you would write the following 5'6" .

So basically, the rules involved in writing height in feet and inches are as follows; what you do is write the numbers in numerical form and then replace the word foot or feet with ' (an apostrophe) to show the word foot is missing, and then replace the word inches with ". This gives you the aforementioned 5'6".

Some countries, or indeed just some people, prefer to use centimeters to show height. In this case, if you have the measurement in feet and inches, it is easiest to use an online converter. These tools are brilliant for changing measurement from one thing to another and do it in the most accurate way. This link will take you to one of this converter sites which I felt worked particularly well; it was straight forward and simple to use but very accurate www.csgnetwork.com/csgcvtmeters2ftincalc.html If you want to do it with your own calculations then you will need to know that one foot is equal to 30.48 centimeters. You will still probably need a calculator or a piece of paper to work this out but it is possible without a converter. Although, we tend to use feet and inches when describing height; if using centimeters we tend only to use centimeters, as opposed to meters and centimeters. So a child who is 1.4 meters in height, we would just say 140 cm.

If writing heights online, most sites will give you the option of whether you want to use feet and inches or centimeters so don't worry if you have trouble converting as both ways are widely used.
