To make a mechanical chalk dust dispenser you will need:
• A tray
• A bin
• An electric motor with a slow speed gear
• An eccentric disc
• Hinges
• An electric drill
The first thing to do is to place the tray at the bottom edge of the chalkboard and incline it so that it slopes away from the chalkboard, and then attach it to the bin using the hinges (and the electric drill) so that the chalk dust can be caught. If you just left the tray like this you would find that you would have to keep knocking the tray so that the chalk dust slides down into the bin, so to make the whole thing mechanical, attach the electric motor to the eccentric disc and position it so that the disc is touching the tray near the top (at the chalkboard end).
When the motor is switched on, the tray will decline and incline every few minutes, which will make the chalk dust fall into the bin.
Having a mechanical chalk dust dispenser means that you will be able to dispose of the chalk dust quickly and easily without the usual inconveniences of getting the dust all over your clothes, onto your skin, which can cause skin irritations and allergies, or inhaling it, which can trigger asthma attacks.
Traditionally, the chalk that is used in schools and colleges used to be proper chalk, which comes from limestone. These days, however, school chalk is made from compressed granite.
