Keithchat1 ton of oil is the same weight as 1 ton of water there will be a difference in size of the container same as with the "whats heavier joke" 1 ton of feathers or 1 ton of lead neither the weight is the same 8)To answer the question as Shifty37 stated:"Water is of greater density that oil. Water molecules are closer together than that of oil, therefore oil floats. Water density is 1000 kg/m while oil is usually about 800 kg/m."

Oil floats on water because oil has less density than water and the the liquid with less density will float on top.

How can 1 ton of oil be heavier than 1 ton of water?

But the other guys right, it is because water is denser than oil.

It's because oil is lighter than water, and of course the lighter thing must get on top of the heavier thing. You should already know that.
