They use it as a means to talk down at others. To make others feel less knowledgeable, and to blow dust up your butt about the importance of their particular project they're working on. For example, let's say you ask an engineer about some lightbulb that is glowing in the corner of his cubical in some light fixture..... You say, hey engineer John, or Paul, or whatever the engineer's name is, what's the wattage on that bulb there? You would expect an answer like, oh that's a 60 watt bulb, or an 100 watt bulb... But no, you will most likely get an answer like, oh that! That's a General Electric B 60-K bulb, it actually has a 150 ohm tungsten filament suspended in an Argon-Krypton gas mixture and is presently at 3800 degrees kelvin temperature, and it's lifespan of 800 Lumens is at 60%.
