London became the capital of England because:
Over time, London has become the cultural, political and economic capital of England, due to the reasons mentioned above.
- A major Roman settlement was founded on the site in 43 AD called Londinium.
- The river Thames is a major trading route.
- The city had large Roman walls which protected it from attack.
- The location was ideal for fishing and trade.
- The Thames flows into the North sea and English channel, linking the city with Europe.
- William the Conqueror developed the settlement and build the Tower of London.
- The Royal Treasury was then located at the Tower of London.
- The City gradually began to become the cultural and economic centre of the country.
- It is where both the government of the UK and the Monarch reside.
