Sociology is the study of the forms and structures of society. Students of sociology are taught different theories of the evolution of society. It is a social science because it helps us to determine what form our society might take in the future, by studying the trends it has been going through and relating them with the theories. All social sciences are meant for the benefit of human beings in their respective social structures. Sociology can benefit man by teaching people to take preventive measures for certain undesired forms of society to formulate, or teaching them ways and means to survive in a certain form of society in the best possible way.

Science is about studying something indepth and formulating theories based on what you going from your research, other's research or you own observations. Sociology, psychology and other social sciences aren't all that different from physics, biology and chemistry. They just study the mind of a person more than what makes the person function physically.
