The ruble or rouble is a currency unit that is used in Russia, Belarus and Transnistria a region located in the Republic of Moldavia, an East European country. In the times of the Soviet Union (1922-1991) the ruble was used in several other countries like Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Latvia and Tajikistan.

The ruble in ancient times referred to a certain weight of silver; it is supposed that the silver ruble was chopped from silver ingot the name ruble being derived from the process as the verb 'rubit' meant to chop off in Russian.

A ruble is sub divided in to kopeks or copecks with one ruble being equal to 100 kopeks. The denominations of the ruble are 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000; the ruble was first used as a currency in Russia from the 16th century. One US Dollar is equal to about 27 rubles while one GB Pound equals 51 rubles.
