Rusting is a general term for the oxidation of iron. Generally, people hate rusting, and you will be surprised to find folks that intentionally rust things in the name of art. There are few methods for rusting things very quickly. Intentional process is necessary for art works. The easiest method is to use muriatic acid along with salt treatment (muriatic acid is harmful and needs precaution while using it).
Pour a small amount of this acid in glass dish, gently put nails, pennies or paper clips into dish, and take a few steps back, as chemical reactions have been triggered (this must be carried out doors). With protective gloves, put some stream of water into the dish so as to dilute the acid. Let water run till the dish over fills, at this point acid has been well mixed. Only then is it safe to handle the metals from the water in the dish. You may improve the results if you sprinkle the wet metal with a heavy coating of salt and allow it to sit for a few days.
Another method is to use half a cup of bleach, half a cup apple of cider vinegar and one tsp of salt (put in jar), loosely cover and leave for two full days.
Remove nails, pennies or paper clips onto paper towels. Leave items outside to dry, turning them occasionally, so all sides dry. Pieces will rust while drying. Another method is to use a solution of white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide (three per cent-- use a fresh bottle) and table salt. Use degreaser to remove oil before putting it in the solution.
Though many processes exist to initiate the process of rust; these chemical combinations will initiate rust very quickly.
