Yes, it is. A sponge is actually a type of animal. It's an invertebrate (ie, no backbone), primitive many-celled animal that lives in fresh and sea water. They can't move, but they 'beat' the water around them, which sets up a current and draws the water into the sponge through its pores, including tiny food particles.
