The word Apothecary has been derived from the Latin word Apotheca which means storehouse and Greek word Apotheke which means to put away. It was used as a historical name for a medical professional. However, he/She was not a doctor, but only a formulator and dispenser for medicines to physicians, surgeons and patients.

The role of Apothecary has been taken up by a Pharmacist. He is now known as a person who prepares and sells drugs or compounds for medical purposes. The role of an Apothecracy is very important for the medical centres and hospitals.
