New York is a state located in the northeastern United States. It is also called the New York State when it has to be differentiated from the New York City. New York can be said to be surrounded by water bodies as its boundaries as, two great lakes, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, former Great Lake (Lake Champlain)

It is bounded by two Great Lakes Erie and Ontario, which are connected by the Niagara River to the south, one former Great Lake (Lake Champlain); the provinces of Ontario and Quebec in Canada; three New England states (Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut); the Atlantic Ocean, and two Mid-Atlantic states (New Jersey and Pennsylvania). New York also shares its water boundaries with The Rhode Islands.

The capital is Albany and the largest city is the New York City. It covers a total area of 141,205 square kilometers, of which 13.3 % comprises of water. This city is classified into Upstate and Downstate. "Upstate" is a widespread idiom for New York State counties north of suburban Westchester, Rockland and Dutchess counties.
