Suomi is basically a Finnish word that mostly referred to: first in Finland, a northern European country. This name is derived from the root "suo", which means bog or swamp or from the Baltic root zeme for "land". And also from the Finnish language itself it is written with lower-case first letter: suomi. Next it also applies to the Republic of Finland wherein, in Finnishit is called Suomi, Suomen tasavalta and in Swedish, it is known as Republiken Finland is one of the Nordic countries.

It is situated in Northern Europe, and is also surrounded with Sweden to the west, Russia to the east and Norway to the north while Estonia lies to its south. It is also surrounded by the Baltic Sea with the Gulf of Finland, which lies to the south and the Gulf of Bothnia lies to the west.
