This, of course, depends upon what subject you wish to study at the Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT). The LIT has four "schools", or areas, in which you can study. These are the School of Art and Design, the School of the Built Environment, the School of Business and Humanities and the School of Science, Engineering and IT. Whether general or bifocal science will be more useful will depend upon which area you choose to study.

• The School of Art and Design

In the School of Art and Design, students can further their studies in ceramics, printmaking, fashion, painting, visual communication, media and teaching. As a result, bifocal science may be more useful, as you will have knowledge and experience in applying your scientific skills to your particular area of interest.

• The School of the Built Environment

In the School of the Built Environment, students will develop their knowledge in the fields of property, construction, civil engineering and quantity surveying. Therefore, a background of bifocal science may again be more useful, as you will already have experience in applying your scientific knowledge to a practical field.

• The School of Business and Humanities

The School of Business and Humanities allows students to develop their skills and knowledge in fields such as accounting, marketing, finance, hospitality, tourism, event management, social care and management. General and bifocal science backgrounds will have advantages and disadvantages in this area, and the School of Business and Humanities teaches a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge.

• The School of Science, Engineering and IT

The School of Science, Engineering and IT allows students to further their education in a wide range of fields, including music production, agricultural mechanization, pharmaceutical analysis and multimedia computer skills. Once again, both general and bifocal science backgrounds will provide you with sufficient skills to study in the School of Science, Engineering and IT, although some departments may value bifocal science over general science.
