This multiple choice question from the Chemistry 2009 SOL test should be answered with B) It is a transition metal from the same period as potassium.

This means it is in the Fourth Period (or row) of the Periodic table of the elements. These elements are all considered stable and most appear in the Earth's crust.  There are 10 possible elements: Scandium, Titanium, Vanadium, Chromium, Manganese, Iron, Cobalt, Nickel, Copper and Zinc.

Transition Elements resemble each other in that they are all metals and they have similar physical and chemical attributes. They are known as Transition Elements because they are placed between the most reactive metals on the left and the non-metals on the right.

The source of the answer is in the Atomic Structure and Periodic Relationship module.

Potassium is a silvery grey, soft and waxy alkali metal with the position Group 1, period 4, block S on the periodic table. It oxidizes quickly in air to form Potassium Superoxide and is highly reactive with water forming potassium hydroxide.

Potassium was not known in Roman times and its Latin name is not a Classical Latin term. The name Kalium was taken from alkali, deriving from the Arabic al-qalyah or ’plant ashes’. The English name comes from the word potash, obtained by leaching the ash of burnt wood or leaves and evaporating the solution in a pot.

It was only in 1736 that the resulting salts could be discriminated from sodium compounds. This led to the element potassium being included in Lavoisier's list of chemical elements in 1789. Potassium metal, meanwhile, was isolated by Sir Humphrey Davy in 1807 by using electrolysis on the molten salt in caustic potash, thus becoming the first metal to be isolated by electrolysis.
