A platform balance is a somewhat outdated form of balance tool that measures the weight of two objects as they relate to one another. In other words, the balance will display and weigh two different objects, which are placed on two different metal circles or platforms that run side by side. Along with the metal circles, there will be a strong base that runs the length of the metal discs, and this base will feature a diagonal level that helps to adjust the balance, based on the weight that is placed on top of it.

  • Similar to a postal scale

In many ways, the mechanism of a platform balance resembles that of a typical, non-electronic postal scale. Of course, today, with all manner of electronic scales that weigh very precisely, the platform balances of yesteryear have generally been augmented with computers that gauge the weight of objects in a very accurate way.

  • How to learn more

Often, these sorts of platform balance scales were (and may still be) used in science laboratories, to measure substances used in science experiments, such as minerals or other materials. Since these scales were portable and relatively lightweight, they were easy to move around as needed. To find out more about platform balance scales, consider reading up on science experiments and methods of measurement that relate to chemistry and biology investigatory projects.

Learning how to balance things on an old-fashioned platform balance can be an excellent way to hone your measuring skills - in some cases, these scales can be purchased new or second hand from science laboratory suppliers or bought (used) through Internet auction websites, such as eBay. Classified ads in your area, such as Craigslist, may also be a great resource for finding  platform balance scales that you can use for any sort of weighing of objects.
