According to the definition of ocean we can say that there are five oceans in the word and they can be named as the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean and Southern Ocean. Some people contradict the existence of the Southern Ocean and they say that there are only four oceans on earth.

When it come to the parameters that define a body of water as ocean it say that it is a very large body of water and it contains salt water only. The oceans surround great land masses and also it divides the land masses into numerous distinct portions.

They can also be defined as intercommunicating bodies of salt water that occupy the depressions of the surface of the earth and is subdivided into other bodies that are called seas.

According to National Geographic:
"There is really only one world ocean; for convenience, most geographers divide it into four: Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, and Indian."

However, apparently in 2000 the southern ocean or Antarctic ocean is now recognized as the fifth ocean.
