What characteristics can not be used to tell the difference between living and nonliving things?

think the difference between the two is whether they have regeneration
capacity.

Don't quote me on this. I am too lazy and drunk right now to do research. At any rate:

The ability to self-propagate, the ability to consume and produce waste, and the need for respiration. Fire exhibits all of these characteristics, and yet is not alive.
