Simple leaves are leaves that are undivided. On the other hand, compound leaves are those leaves that are composed of several parts. These parts of the leaves are known as leaflets.

Simple leaves are leaves that have only one unit of leaf-blade. On the other hand, once-compound leaves are composed of more than two units of leaf blades. The two leaf-blade units of a once-compound leaf are directly attached to the stalk of the leaf or the rachis. It is, in fact, an extension of the leaf stalk. The other variety of compound leaves, namely more than once-compound leaves, is defined as those compound leaves in which two or more units of leaf-blade are attached to the branches of the rachis. This is also an extension of the leaf stalk. A leaf can be characterised as a simple leaf or a compound leaf depending on the position of its petiole.
