The barometer registers local current air pressure. Observation of the readings given by a barometer over a period of time will allow one to determine if air pressure is increasing or decreasing, and at what rate.

Experience has taught us that low pressure is often correlated with weather that involves clouds, precipitation, and/or wind ("bad" weather), and that high pressure is often correlated with clear skies and stagnant air ("fair" weather). By making use of observations of changes in air pressure and their correlated weather patterns, we can use a barometer to predict weather.
