Why is it when you sing higher notes, your voice gets raspy or even stronger? How do vocal chords work?

It's because vocal cords are the inner muscles on the larynx in your throat and they expand and contract when you sing.To hit a higher note, you stretch these muscles by opening your mouth wider. That's how you get the raspy sound as the muscles are stretched out like an elastic band.

Yeah my voice gets raspy like Demi Lovato's when I do that and I can do that like Christina Aguilera's as well:)
