Why does sound pitch goes on changing when empty bucket is filled with water?

The resonant cavity, the space above the water, goes on changing in size as the bucket fills.

I make use of this property when filling my metal water bottle. I can't see when it is full, but I can hear the pitch change and I know whst sound corresponds to ”full”.
