It is strong and efficient for storage and handling.

Probably the strongest shape is a sphere, but those are difficult to handle, and don't stay put very well. The next best is a shape that is round in one view and rectangular in another view. That shape is a cylinder. Even so, for very high pressure gases, the ends are rounded for strength and a skirt put on so the vessel will stand up.

LPG storage is probably in a cylinder because of the ease of storage and transport. Those cylinders can be quite heavy when they are full and the cylinder shape helps it to be rolled if need be. As opposed to a boxed shape, the current "package" can make a fair bit more sense to the people who have to carry them around to their customers!
