Hard to describe the shape, and it varies, however
you have multi branches out of the rear of the cell body (dendrites) which are used to receive signals, could be from another nerve, or from a sense like seeing lite. These receptors dendrites pass a weak signal forward to the cell body. The cell body basically decides (more complicated) if signal is valid, if it is, it sends it out a signal over a very long fiber or cell nerve to the item needing the signal. This signal is very strong and always makes it to the end.
Hope that helps.
