First time spectators at a softball game could mistake it for baseball. In softball a pitcher pitches the ball at a batter who scores runs by hitting the ball and running from base to base. The softball ground is shaped like a diamond as is the baseball ground.

George Hancock invented softball in the 1887. Hancock was a journalist with the Chicago Board of Trade, more importantly he was an avid baseball fan. Baseball was traditionally not played during winter; he began playing softball so that he and his friends do not lose their touch for baseball during winter. The Amateur Softball Association was founded in 1933. Prior to the formation of the association softball was viewed as more of a hobby than a sport. Rules were agreed upon only after the Amateur Softball Association was formed. Canada was an early adopter of the sport following its popularity in the United States of America.
