When two individual successfully mate to create offspring (as opposed to a clone), that new individual possesses trait of both parents.  The genetic traits may be considered positive ( stronger, faster, smart in animals) or negative.  They are, however, considered evolution, or change.  Some traits may be selected out and minimized by nature ( ex. White moths being eaten by birds as rest on a dark tree).  Evolution may tend to favor the dark moth in this environment.
