Organisms that are predators (think: A lion chasing a gazelle, or a whale eating fish) adapt to catch prey by becoming faster than the prey, by refining their hunting methods (i.e. Sneaking up on the prey, or hiding in a place that is unknown to the prey), etc.    Organisms that are prey (think: An earthworm being eaten by a bird, or a mouse being hunted by a coyote) must also adapt to escape from their predators. In this case, they must become faster than their predator in order to escape imminent death, and in some cases, they even camouflage into their surroundings so that the predator passes the prey by without a second glance.
