White matter is what connects different regions of the grey matter in the cerebrum to one another. Grey matter is the darker tissue of the brain and spinal cord, consisting mainly of nerve cell bodies and branching dendrites.

For a while, people did not see the importance of white matter and left it alone, while only studying grey matter. But they realized that white matter is important because it connects areas of grey matter, providing for more pathways for it.
