It is important to protect the water, land, and air resources because they are the foundation of all life on Earth.  Terrestrial creatures drink the water, eat the things grown and sustained by things in the earth, and breath the air around them.  Aquatic creatures need water to survive, to breed, to feed and the air provides dissolved oxygen they need to respirate properly.  The land around and in the oceans, lakes, ponds, streams, and etc provide a substrate on which all types of plants can grow.  Basically, if we waste any of the resources, life on earth would likely cease to exist or become so polluted and corrupt that life would not be worth living.
