The storage form of glucose, glycogen, is stored in the liver for use throughout the entire body and in the muscle cells for muscle use alone.

This storage form of glucose is released directly into the blood stream. The red blood cells are not designed to carry this form of proto-glucose, or any glucose for that matter. RBC's carry O2 and, somewhat, CO2.
